Ipswich Town’s Under 18s are into the FA Youth Cup 4th Round, following a dramatic come-from-behind win against Fulham at Portman Road last night (Monday 7th December).
In descending fog and freezing temperatures, Adem Atay’s young Blues were caught cold in the early exchanges and found themselves 0-2 down inside 25 minutes against an impressive Cottagers side. That was the half-time scoreline although, in truth, the visitors from West London could have found themselves further ahead at the break.
The second half was a completely different proposition, however, with Town coming out on the front foot as they attacked the Sir Bobby Robson (North) Stand end of the ground. Within minutes of the restart, a smart Liam Gibbs free-kick found Brooklyn Kabongolo in the box and the Blues centre back sent a towering header into the net.
Ipswich continued to press for an equaliser and a home goal seemed the more likely, although the Londoners also had chances to extend their lead. The scoreline remained at 2-1 until injury time, when Harley Curtis was felled in the area. Gibbs slotted away the penalty with an ice-cold composure that matched the frosty conditions.
It seemed that Town had sent the game into extra time, but incredibly Curtis, a first-half substitute, had other ideas and poked beyond the Fulham ‘keeper deep into injury time to cue wild celebrations. Despite some late, late pressure from the visitors, the Blues stood firm to book a place in the 4th Round next month (ties to be played by Saturday 30 January 2021 – draw yet to be made at the time of writing).
