A young Ipswich Town Under 23s side was held to a draw away to Wigan Athletic yesterday (Monday 19th April 2021).
Kieron Dyer and Terry Butcher’s side travelled to the north-west for this 11am kick-off, looking to bounce back from the 1-0 home defeat against Barnsley six days earlier.
The game remained goalless until late on, when it looked as though Town would be bringing all three points back to Suffolk thanks to a fortuitous opener in the 81st minute. A long-range Alfie Cutbush (pictured) strike from 25 yards out cannoned off the bar, hit the back of diving Latics ‘keeper Sam Tickle and rebounded into the back of the net.
That was not the last of the late drama, however, as the home side equalised from the penalty spot in the fourth minute of added time to make the full-time score Wigan Athletic 1-1 Ipswich Town. The result means that Town stay in second position in the Professional Development League South table, with Nottingham Forest at home next for the young Blues (Tuesday 27th April, 1.00pm, behind closed doors) in what will be the penultimate fixture of the season.
